The nation’s longest winning streak came to an abrupt ending Thursday as second-ranked Oregon handed Florida State its worst bowl loss ever, 59-20 in the Rose Bowl — college football’s first semifinal. The Seminoles did themselves little favors with five turnovers, but in the end, Oregon proved to be too much.
Florida State finishes the 2014 season with a record of 13-1. The Seminoles will fall short of a second straight national championship, but will claim a third straight ACC title. For the final time this season, the Noled Out staff hands out its game balls:
Offense
Mike Ferguson and Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Jameis Winston, QB
In what could have been his final game in garnet and gold, Jameis Winston passed for 348 yards and a touchdown on 29-for-45 passing. Winston’s numbers could have been more impressive, but he had a few drops from his wide receivers. Winston did have a pair of untimely turnovers which led to Oregon touchdowns, but if this is the last we see of Jameis Winston, a 26-1 record as a starter, two ACC titles, a Heisman Trophy and a national championship is a pretty solid career.
Defense
Mike Ferguson and Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Nate Andrews, S
It was a tough day for the entire Florida State secondary, but sophomore safety Nate Andrews was among the bright spots. Andrews finished second on the team with 10 total tackles while becoming just the third player this season to intercept Oregon’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Special Teams
Mike Ferguson and Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Roberto Aguayo, K
Florida State’s All-American kicker Roberto Aguayo was 2-for-3 on field goal attempts Thursday with a miss from 54 yards out that hit the upright. On the season, Aguayo finished 25-for-28 and as a Consensus All-American.
