Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey opened up the Rose Bowl against Iowa by catching a pass over the middle and immediately taking off for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.

As McCaffrey was running in open space, the memories of Rose Bowls past quickly surfaced for many Penn State fans that were watching. In the 1995 Rose Bowl, Penn State had an easy play to call on its first play from scrimmage once the offense took the field. Toss the ball to Ki-Jana Carter and let him do the rest. Carter took Penn State’s first play of the Rose Bowl 83-yards right up the middle of the field for a quick score.

As fate would have it, Carter happened to be watching the Rose Bowl as McCaffrey was making Iowa’s defense look like Glass Joe in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. Carter chimed in on Twitter…

McCaffrey was not touched on his first-play touchdown, and it did not go as long as Carter’s, so we’ll give the legendary Penn State running back the edge here in degree of difficulty. Let’s be honest though, both were pretty sweet plays.
