Ok, the title of this post is a bit misleading given the fact that Roy Spoon has never left. Inarguably one of the most tenacious fighters to reside in North Texas, Spoon has quickly made a name for himself following a number of incredibly impressive performances in the cage. The Dallas-based welterweight has most recently been tearing up the XKO cage with five of his last six fights taking place with Arlington promotion.
This Saturday night will feature Spoon’s return to the XKO cage. His previous fight at XKO 10 this past April saw Spoon take a unanimous decision over Brandon Smith. Since that time Spoon has been in non-stop training splitting time between Octagon MMA and Dallas Jawbreakers. In fact, if you follow Spoon on Facebook you can see daily how dedicated he is to becoming a comprehensive fighter as he typically posts his workout locations throughout the day. For a fighter with the raw natural aggression that Spoon displayed early in his career, his decision to perfect his craft with two of North Texas’ premier fight camps should give fellow welterweights a moment to pause.
Spoon will headline this Saturday’s XKO 12 card against former UFC veteran Anthony “Mad Dog” Macias. Macias was a fixture back in the no holds barred days of the UFC and brings with him to the cage a vast wealth of knowledge and experience.
“I’ve watched the guy fight since I was a youngster. Slick ground game good stand up and lots of fights,” Spoon explained to TXMMA.com’s Mike Calimbas in an interview you must check out.
With such a high profile assignment, and with the fight being taped to air locally on TXA 21 in the near future, stakes are high for Spoon. A win on Saturday could potentially set him back up to again fight XKO champion Chris Jones for the title. It’s a fight that you have to assume is high on Spoon’s wish list given the defeat he suffered at the hands of Jones back at XKO 8. But, like most fighters Spoon is deadest on his present assignment.
