Rudy Gay will not be making his Sacramento Kings debut against the Utah Jazz at Sleep Train Arena. The Kings pulled off a blockbuster seven-player deal to acquire Gay from the Toronto Raptors Monday, but nothing is official in the NBA until all players involved have taken a physical.
With tonight’s game less than an hour and half away, the Kings were still waiting for Greivis Vasquez to arrive in Toronto and for Raptors medical staff to give the thumbs up. Until then Gay, Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy are barred from suiting up and taking part in team activities.
“I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing guys that have not gone through at least a shoot-around,” Malone said during his pregame availability against the Jazz. “Rudy, Quincy, Aaron, they’ll not play tonight. They will be on the bench supporting us and if they have any helpful thoughts for me, I’ll take them.”
After flying to New York to secure a working visa from the Canadian Consulate, Vasquez arrived in Toronto at around 3:30 pm PT . He took his physical this evening, but the Raptors will not know the results of the tests until tomorrow.
“I haven’t gotten word that our guys can play,” Malone said. “But even if they were cleared at this point, I wouldn’t put them out there.”
Barring any setbacks in Vasquez’s physical, Gay and company will now be expected to make their Kings debut Friday against the Phoenix Suns.
