Rumblin’,Stumblin’,Bumblin’: Penn State Aftermath

Rumblin’

I have to say my piece about the type of football player JT Barrett is and hopefully everyone understands that he isn’t superhuman or able to prevent poor line play with mind melding. He is not able to prevent blocked punts and field goals with his lazer beams either so forget that!

As fans, we are witnessing some of the best football from a quarterback at Ohio State maybe ever. Those of us who watched Troy Smith knew we were watching the best to ever play at that time. What JT is accomplishing is at a higher level than that in my opinion simply because he is doing a lot of what he is with out the supporting cast that Smith had.

The most important stat at the end of the day will always be the W. You aren’t much of a fan if all you care about is if the stats get padded. Sorry if that stings a little bit but it’s a factual statement. I don’t care if we beat them by 90 unless its TTUN and I do not care if he throws for a million yards in a season. What I do care is that he leads that team in the manner that he is and does everything within his power to win the game.

I am pretty sure that in the big picture of Saturday night, JT Barrett did just that and his team just wasn’t on the same page with the other eight units. Think about that for a second, he was pretty strong on Saturday night and did not lose the game, special teams did. I am staying on the Barrett for Heisman bandwagon because I think that he wins it when it’s all said and done.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Rumblin’

Scott – OSU fans. They, rightfully so, are not happy right now.

JC – I agree with Ben.  Alabama “unfortunately” is heading back to the CFP’s.  I do not see who can stop them at this point.  But hopefully they will be educated in the CFP’s … and my novenas are geared toward a Buckeyes slipping in as they did in 2014.

Ben – I watched Alabama on Saturday before the Buckeye debacle and although A&M played them well, I don’t see anyone knocking these guys off. They are playing at a level this season that I haven’t seen another team play at and they are only getting better each week. The loss of Eddie Jackson will hurt, but they will find someone on their roster to step up.

Stumblin’

All of the JT Barrett talk aside, let’s address the elephant in the room. I remember a time after back-to-back losses in 2013 to Sparty and Clemson when fans were clamoring for the firing of Tom Herman because of the play calling and not including Carlos Hyde in short yardage plays in both games and sticking with Braxton Miller instead.

Folks, this isn’t an offensive coordinator issue and never will be. It is all on the shoulders of the head man who will always stick with his favorite player at the time. JT Barrett runs the ball so much because Urban Meyer has a warm and fuzzy keeping it in the decision makers hands.

In total, there have probably been five to ten total plays involved in the five losses in the time he has been in Columbus so that’s a trade off that I am happy with. Unfortunately for the team, the result is a loss due to the o-line not picking up the slack or not being prepared for what Penn State was bringing. Sharing the wealth is the best answer here but I am not sure it’s in the coaches mindset anymore.

In the mind set of teams win and lose together, there is nobody to blame for the loss but the team effort and execution. You can blame the play-calling and the coaching if you like, but at the end of the day it boils down to poor execution by kids who played their last games in high school. Give them the season to get it and they will!

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Stumblin’

Scott – The Buckeyes. Since the Oklahoma win things have not been the same. Special teams failed OSU as did the OL.

JC –  The offensive play-calling of the Buckeyes.  Warinner & Beck are the worst.  I wouldn’t trust them to pick up coffee for the staff … they’d probably mess up the order and then accept the mistakes ….

Ben – The Buckeye performance the last couple of weeks has been stumbling and it culminated with a loss in Happy Valley on Saturday. Let’s hope this loss springboards the Buckeyes like the VT loss in 2014 and the Michigan State loss last year.

I was just going to insert last weeks officiating complaining here but what good will it do?

I am honestly tired of seeing the lack of effort at a high level. I can promise you that no matter what the situation is in my high school games, each team gets my maximum effort. The officials at the D1 level are so arrogant and full of themselves that they honestly do not care about the kids.

There is no reason to be fair in their work because at the end of the day they receive what is referred to as a comma check in the collegiate ranks. Maybe if they were evaluated for effort, hustle and fairness, they would change their mentality. So, at the end of the day I guess I am blaming NCAA leadership for not encouraging officials to care about how they are effecting games. Bad horse collar calls and missed PI’s didn’t cost the Buckeyes Saturday night but they assisted in slowing them down.

Until someone does something about it, we will continue to see these things happen every Saturday. I will continue to respect the ones that are trying to make a difference in the college game and dis the rest.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Bumblin’

Scott – Whomever missed the pass interference penalty late in the game.

JC –  This is a dual answer …. The Offensive call-playing of Warinner & Beck, for obvious reasons, that I will stay on until they get demoted, move on elsewhere, or I have a stroke because of the cholesterol friendly foods I pummel.  And then I must say the Special Teams … SMH …. What happened?

Ben – Special Teams almost never fail under Urban Meyer coached teams, and we saw two failures on Saturday night. The field goal unit was rushed onto the field late, and had only a few seconds to get set and kick resulting in a bad kick from Tyler Durbin that was blocked and returned for a touchdown. Cam Johnston also had a punt blocked due to his methodical punt routine. Urban was 24-0 when having blocked a kick, but when the other team blocks two, you fall to 24-1.
