Glen Davis to Magic for Brandon Bass

BassUPDATE: Sherrod Blakely says it's a done deal.

UPDATE: Marc Spears reports the trade will happen.

Dan Duggan of the Herald has the scoop on this rumor:

The Celtics have apparently decided that Glen Davis’ future is better elsewhere.

According to a league source, the Cs are in discussions with Orlando to send Big Baby, in a sign-and-trade deal, to Orlando for power forward Brandon Bass – a player Magic management had been very high on at one stage.

In addition, the Celtics are pursuing Chris Wilcox, a journeyman big man who played with Detroit last season. The team is also finalizing a trade for Bucks guard Keyon Dooling and a second round draft pick. The Cs will only trade the rights to Albert Morales – a player they have held the rights to for the last five years.

Negotiations have been completed to sign Marquis Daniels, Michael Sweetney has been invited back for hsi second straight camp, and the Celtics will also introduce Jamal Sampson, a player who starred in the NBDL last year.

Whenever I read reports about the Magic having interest in Glen Davis, I doubted the seriousness because of Brandon Bass. But it appears Orlando isn't so high on Bass.

Here's John Hollinger's scouting analysis of the 6-8, 250 pounder:

+ Tough, strong but undersized big man with accurate midrange jump shot.

+ Can be effective driving right and finishing. Plays best as undersized 5.

+ Average at best defensively. Lacks length and has limited help awareness.

Bass continues to excel as a midrange shooter, making 46.1 percent of his shots beyond 10 feet, and he also converted 66.5 percent at the rim and drew a high rate of fouls. He's not the most creative ballhandler in the world, but defenders who overplay his free throw line jumper are punished with a strong right-handed drive. He's not passing once he gets it, but overall he's a fairly potent offensive weapon.

Defensively, he's had his ups and downs, but was better last season than in his first campaign with the Magic — a key reason he moved into the starting lineup. Bass is undersized for a 4 and isn't much of a rebounder, but is tough and moves well. However, he needs to get his paws on more balls: Only two power forwards had fewer steals per minute.

There are similarities between Bass and Davis. Can shoot at mid-range, plays undersized 5,  weak rebounder and black hole. I'm fairly confident Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett will turn Bass into a better help defender. One notable difference.. Bass appears to be in great shape.

Bass has a $4 million contract with a $4 million player option for next season.

There's a poll after the jump.
