I woke up this morning with the swirling rumors that Terry Francona will meet with the Red Sox today and ask them not to pick up his 2 year option. It was first reported by the Chicago Sun Times and then it was also reported by Ken Rosenthal from Fox Sports.
If Tito is leaving and it is because of a bad clubhouse culture that sure is a shame. There are also swirling rumors that there were starting pitchers who were drinking beer in the clubhouse during their off days. If that is true, totally unacceptable. If it is true, how did it get allowed to continue.
So, while the collapse may not be blamed on Terry…the culture of the clubhouse and the diva behavior of some of the players may mean a great manager may ask to have the doors shown to him.
I had said as the season was starting to fall apart that Tito needed to stay. I didn’t think the collapse could be placed on his shoulders. In the press conference yesterday, Theo said that blame would not be placed on Terry. However, at the same time it looks like Terry might have had enough. It’s a crying shame. Terry Francona has been everything that the Red Sox could ask for. He has worked well with players and a lot of egos. He’s managed the team well off and on the field. It seems like this year, the off field stuff might have started to feel like too much for him. I didn’t think earlier in the season or even just a couple of weeks ago that it would be Tito who would want to go, but now…it seems that may be the case.
Or all of this may be rumors and none of it may be true. However, it feels true.
Tito. You are the Red Sox. If this is true, you will be missed…desperately.
