Leave it to the New York Jets to make the oddest of QB changes, and this even before the first preseason game.
Geno Smith, the former second round pick from 2013, was to start off the season as the Jets QB, but on Tuesday, things escalated quickly. A locker room brawl, described more as a sucker punch from Ikemefuna Enemkali, who is now an ex-Jet, left Geno with a broken jaw. He’s expected to miss six to 10 weeks, meaning the Harvard Bomber, Ryan Fitzpatrick, will take over at quarterback. Barring any future signings, rookie Bryce Petty should move up the depth chart to the No. 2 spot.
Fitzpatrick is more than a serviceable backup in the NFL, he’s played solid when he’s got the chance to play. In 12 games last season with Houston, Fitzpatrick led the Texans to a 6-6 mark, firing 17 touchdowns to eight interceptions. In the best game of his career, Fitzpatrick threw six touchdowns as Houston rolled over Tennessee 45-21.
The New York Jets are the sixth team of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 11-year career, and now once again, he finds himself in the starting role, despite the oddest of reasons why.
