After honoring a great player and a hero of WWII yesterday in Dave Schreiner, we move back to this season’s roster… Well, at least what we know the roster to look like today – you know, since it seems like transfer news comes out on a seemingly daily basis lately.
Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about the man that occupies our version of 79 days to Badger football leaving the program anytime soon. Why? That’s because his name is Ryan Groy and he’s going to be a starter on the offensive line and has been for quite some time now.
In fact, Groy is already garnering some preseason honors, being named to TheB1GTime’s Preseason Top 25 Players list – landing at No. 24 – and being named to the Preseason 3rd team All-Big Ten team by Phil Steele. So, why is he getting this recognition?
Story So Far:
– 2012 2nd team All-Big Ten (coaches), Honorable Mention All-Big Ten (media), academic All-Big Ten (2011 as well)
– Has played in 41 games in his career, 20 of them starts. Started all 14 games in 2012, 4 in 2011, and 2 in his redshirt freshman season of 2010.
– Groy is perhaps the most versatile offensive lineman on the UW roster, he’s started at least one game at every position on the O-Line except for right tackle
History of No. 79 at Wisconsin:
Aaron Gibson (OT, 1996-98): Gibson was a mountain of a man, but incredibly athletic and flexible for someone that was pushing close to, if not over 4 bills for most of his career at UW. Gibson was a member of the 1999 Rose Bowl winning team. That 1998 season he was also a consensus 1st team All-American and a finalist for both the Lombardi and Outland trophies. He was a 1st round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in the 1999 NFL draft.
