Philadelphia Might Have a Taker for Ryan Howard

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to unload Ryan Howard…and they might just have an interested party.

The team has made it public that they’d be willing to eat $50 million of the $60 million they owe Howard and the York Revolution of the independent Atlantic League appear to be willing to take them up on the offer.

But there’s a catch…they’d like to get their fans to foot the bill.

“If there are roughly 400,000 people living in York County, we only need $25 from each of them to have the funds necessary to put Ryan Howard in a Revolution uniform,” York General Manager John Gibson said.  “Some dads might have to dock a kid’s allowance for a couple weeks, big deal.”

So, how is the stunt working? Well.  Paul Braverman, the guy who cooked up the stunt for the Revolution, confirms that, yeah, they’ve sold some extra tickets and even raised a few hundred bucks.  But, as he points out…it was never really about really bringing in the 2007 National League MVP.

“A lot of our fans were really excited by the idea. Almost everybody has recognized that it was tongue-in-cheek,” Braverman told The Hall. “The diehard fans that follow us every day know that we could use someone with [Howard’s] particular skillset however.”

Is Howard going to suit up for the Revolution any time soon? No, he won’t. But could the guy make the nearly two-hour drive west on I-76 from Citizens Bank Park to make an appearance at Santander Stadium in York? Sure! How cool would that be?

Oh, in case you were wondering what Howard would look like as a member of the Revolution…there’s this. Enjoy!
