Ryan Mallett or Brian Hoyer: Who starts at QB for Houston?

Houston Texans v Cleveland Browns

Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer were both teammates with the New England Patriots back in 2011. Three years later, both quarterbacks were starting opposite each other, and the guy they backed up, took notice.

Tom Brady, who has an active Facebook account, posted

One year later, both Hoyer and Mallett are teammates again, this time, they are competing for the starting job in Houston.

Hoyer is the obvious choice. He’s got far more experience, and a nice resume to go with it. In 2013, He won both games he started before an injury ended his season in Cleveland. Named the starting QB in 2014, Hoyer led the Browns to a 6-3 start, their best start in over 20 years, and most of that was without their No. 1 wide receiver, Josh Gordon.

But Hoyer fell into a slump and Cleveland dropped 3 of 4 games, and eventually, Johnny Manziel was named the starter. Hoyer signed with Houston in the offseason.

Ryan Mallett was a third round pick in 2011, and was inactive for most of the season. In 2012 he played only in blowout wins for the Patriots and didn’t see any real game action until his first start with Houston, against Brian Hoyer and the Cleveland Browns. Mallett outshone Hoyer that day, tossing two touchdowns as the Texans won 23-7.

Now they are both teammates, and one of them come Week 1, will be the starter in Houston, question is, who?

GuruQB believes Ryan Mallett should be the starter in Houston.

At some point, the Texans have to figure out if they’ve got a franchise QB, and the only way to find out is to name Mallett the starter, and see how things pan out. If he struggles, then you go with Hoyer- you know what you have in him, but Mallett must be given the chance to play.
