Ryan Theriot has handed in his resignation from Major League Baseball.
When he came to the Cardinals prior to the 2011 season, many viewed Theriot as David Eckstein Version 1.25. 5'11" and 185 lbs.
Scrappy.
Never the guy you were thrilled to start the season with, but always better than 75% of the other options you were considering.
A classic safe bet.
He played in 132 games for the Cardinals in 2011 and posted a .271 avg / .316 obp / .637 ops with 16 doubles and 28 batted in. However, he was a pretty big mess in the field. Posting a -10 Rtot, meaning the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made was -10 (at SS).
He played 35 games at 2B and posted a +3 Rtot there, so he was OK as long as he wasn't at short.
Leaving the Cardinals after they acquired Rafael Furcal to shore up the SS defense (and provide an upgrade at the plate as well), he went to the Giants for 1 season. He did not play in 2013.
After 6 seasons with the Cubs. 1 each with the Giants & Cards plus a .5 season with the Dodgers, he's now completed his playing tenure.
I don't know about you guys, but it feels like Theriot was here like 5 years ago, but it hasn't been that long since he was the answer at SS.
The Cardinals SS void has been filled by many men since Ozzie Smith retired. Theriot lasted about the average amount of time, all things considered.
