The city of Sacramento will make its first legislative statement in this third act of the Kings saga. Next week, the city will vote on a resolution of support on the effort to keep the team and build a new arena.
Councilman Allen Warren, chair of the ad hoc committee addressing the Kings/arena issue, requested last night that the vote be added to the agenda of next week’s council meeting. Warren indicated that cities and counties around the region are already taking similar steps. He noted that Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, West Sacramento along with Sacramento and Yolo counties are considering similar resolutions of support.
“Part of this whole effort to keep the Kings has been recognized as a regional issue,” Warren said in comments at council Tuesday evening. “And we know that they’re a regional asset to us…”
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson told reporters in his weekly press conference yesterday that some formal acknowledgement by the city was coming.
“The city’s commitment to partnering on a new downtown arena is not something that’s new,” Johnson said. “But we gotta go forward and make a statement and say we’re willing to do it with the right partners and making sure we protect our taxpayers and all the things that we’ve said are key components in terms of core tenants – all that’s in place.”
The resolution will serve mainly as a symbolic gesture in the city’s bid to save the Kings. Council is scheduled to vote on the issue next Tuesday the 19th.
