According to multiple reports this morning, the Sacramento Kings are working towards a buyout for former 2011 10th overall selection Jimmer Fredette. While we can confirm that talks have taken place, a league source tells Cowbell Kingdom that the transaction will not take place today.
Sacramento attempted to move Fredette at the trade deadline last week, but found little market for his $2.6 million salary. So on his 25th birthday, Jimmer might be on the verge of getting his biggest wish – a fresh start in a new NBA city.
“It’s going to be nice that I’ll be a free agent after the season,” Jimmer told Cowbell Kingdom last week. “So I can go out and see the interest in (me) and sort of choose where I want to go, so to say. And go to a team that definitely wants me and it will be nice to go out there be able to see what’s going on.”
On the season, Jimmer is averaging 5.9 points (47.5% FG, 49.3% 3-point) in a little over 11 minutes per game, but he hasn’t seen a minute of action in the Kings previous two games.
The former BYU star and college player of the year has struggled to find a consistent role with Sacramento since coming to the team in a 2011 draft day trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. With 26 games remaining in the season, the Kings have shifted their focus to rookie Ray McCallum as the teams back up point guard, leaving Jimmer without a spot in the rotation.
There is no word on whether Jimmer will be in uniform for the Kings when they face the Houston Rockets at Sleep Train Arena tonight and we will continue to update you as this story develops.
