The Sacramento Kings have finalized the construction team for their new downtown home. The team announced this morning that they have selected AECOM to lead architectural design for the proposed downtown arena.
According to the Kings, new conceptual renderings for the arena will be ready by this fall and the final design of the building will be finished by early to mid 2014. All architectural design work will be completed by AECOM in Sacramento in order “to ensure ongoing local input in the design process.”
“We are thrilled to be selected to design the new downtown arena,” said Jon Niemuth, Director of AECOM Sports, Americas, in a press release sent out Sunday morning. “For some of the best fans in the NBA, we are prepared to design an arena that will not only provide a tremendous home court advantage for the Kings, but that will also create an amazing experience for everyone who steps foot in and around the facility. This project will transform downtown and the entire region.”
AECOM has a track record of designing world-class sporting venues. They’ve served as lead architect for 11 NBA arenas, their most recent project being the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. They also designed the Olympic Park for the 2012 London Games and are currently in the process of doing the same for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
AECOM is also no stranger to the Sacramento region. Their previous work includes Aggie Stadium, which opened as the current home of UC Davis football in 2007.
“We have assembled the best artists in the world to design and build the new arena,” said Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé in the release. “From the Bird’s Nest in Beijing to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, AECOM has the resume to design and create the most technologically advanced and fan-centric arena in the world.”
Turner Construction and ICON Venue Group were also previously selected by the Kings to serve as project manager and lead builder for the new arena, respectively.
