The injury bug struck the Sacramento Kings early and decisively tonight in Houston, as both Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins went down with lower leg injuries.
Gay tweaked his left Achilles tendon at the 7:03 mark of the first quarter. At first he tried to play through the injury, but the veteran wing left the floor after a Rockets timeout at the 6:43 mark of the first and was quickly deemed “out for the remainder of the contest.”
The early word on Gay is that he has a left Achilles strain. The injury is not considered serious.
Cousins injured himself trying to take the ball coast-to-coast after a rebound during the first half. He rolled his left ankle at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter and had to be assisted to the locker room by Aaron Gray.
The play resulted in a foul call on Rockets guard Patrick Beverley, but the replay shows that Cousins had already injured himself before contact was made. The Kings star center was unable to shoot the resulting free throws, by league rule ending his night. Cousins finished the night with two points and four rebounds, ending his record double-double streak at 15 games.
Cousins’ x-rays came back negative for fracture and he is listed as day-to-day with a moderate left ankle sprain.
