On the eve of their final preseason game, the Sacramento Kings have made a move to trim down their roster. Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro announced in a press release this afternoon that the team has waived rookie guard Trent Lockett.
“I think every day that you’re on an NBA roster (helps you get better),” Lockett told Cowbell Kingdom earlier this week before being cut of his NBA experience. “And just being immersed with these guys, just learning the NBA game – the spacing and the timing of everything and where guys like that the ball.”
Lockett was signed to the Kings after a solid performance on their Summer League team in July. The rookie guard of Marquette appeared in two preseason games for the Kings, recording four points, two rebounds and an assist in five minutes of total action off the bench.
There is a chance that Lockett remains part of the organization’s plans. Barring an offer to play overseas, the Kings retain Lockett’s rights to allocate the rookie guard to the Reno Bighorns, provided he signs a standard D-League contract.
With Lockett’s departure, the Kings’ roster now stands at a league maximum 15 players. With veteran big man Carl Landry sidelined for the next few months due the injury, the Kings have a total 14 healthy bodies headed into the regular season.
