Former Gamecocks running back Derek Watson has again made a bad decision. This time he is being charged by Greenville County Sheriff’s department with trafficking in cocaine and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after a four month investigation linked to a October arrest.
He was arrested yesterday and posted bail as yesterday you could read the arrest record via the Greenville County Detention database but now it is gone. This means he or someone posted the $40,000 bail. He faces up to 20 years in jail if found guilty on the charges.
Again very sad for the former Mr. Football in South Carolina as he had 88 touchdowns and 6,766 rushing yards out of Palmetto High School. He had so much potential but could not keep his nose clean as troblue found him. This is not his first run-in with the law as he had a assault charge, driving under suspension and a another drug charge before being kicked off the USC football team in 2002.
Although he went undrafted, he was on the New England Patriots’ practice squad in 2003. He was out of pro football completely in 2004 and then tried to catch on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005. This did not work out so he returned to South Carolina but never gave up on the dream of playing professional football. In 2009, the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders gave him a chance that lasted until 2010.
Let’s all hope Derek gets his life on track and things work out for him in the end.
