The Saints’ defense held the Saints’ offense to just one score today during the scrimmage. The defense also scored a touchdown, thanks to a strip by Jonathan Vilma of rookie tight end Jimmy Graham, that Jimmy Wilkerson scooped up for a score. These are stats from the scrimmage according to Jeff Duncan’s twitter account.
The defense had 6 sacks: (Junior Gallette, Will Smith, Troy Evans, Jimmy Wilkerson, Alex Brown, Leigh Torrence/Bobby McCray)
Rushing stats: Hamilton 7-26, Ivory 4-16, Hill 5-12, Bush 2-10 1 TD
Receiving stats: Colston 4-73, D. Thomas 2-40
Passing stats: Brees 6-16 110 0-0, Ramsey 9-16 72 0-0, Daniel 4-6 32 0-0, Canfield 5-7 31 0-0.
Personally, I’m feeling pretty good about how things went. I have zero worries about the offense. They will hit their stride by the time the season starts and I have full confidence this is nothing more than a bad day. For the defense to be playing well, though, is very encouraging. With Fujita gone and the defensive line still getting figured out, the front 7 is still somewhat suspect. For them to hold the offense to low yards per carry and medium passing success is nice to see. 6 sacks and a defensive td, in particular, are great to see. The fact that the offense struggled so mightily is more a reflection of Ramsey, Daniel and Canfield’s struggles leading the team down the field. The opening touchdown was with Brees leading them to the end zone. We know when the regular season starts Brees will be the full time quarterback and the team will be fine. The fact that the defense routinely stopped everyone else is a good sign. I think we should all walk away from this development encouraged.
