A lot of NFL players voiced their frustration about being unhappy with Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and some other players reportedly lobbying for extra perks in a new CBA. Yesterday I blogged on a story that involved Brees and Manning being exempt from a franchise tag as part of the new CBA.
After Scott Shanle tweeted “tell me this not really happening” I responded to him on twitter with:
“do you agree it’s total BS of Drew to further his own benefit/gain if that’s true? Why should he & Peyton get better treatment?”
Shanle then said to me “I agree”.
Granted that was all said with the understanding there was a good chance the story wasn’t true. Still, I was surprised to see that response from Shanle.
Of course, with the mounting pressure of critical ire banging on his door, Brees finally tweeted last night:…
“I hesitate to even dignify the false media reports with a response, but obviously they are leading people astray. I want no special perks. My job is to get a fair deal for all players, and I am proud to represent them all – past, present and future. All media claims about me wanting a personal reward for this deal are false. I hope you all know me better than that”
I trust Brees as an ethical person, and I don’t believe he would pursue his own agenda and try to further his own gain in this situation. Hopefully that puts this to rest. I will say I was a little caught off by the very public negative reaction of players at this news. That unified front melted pretty fast. Shanle’s comments were very mild compared to some around the league.
Vikings’ punter Chris Kluwe tweeted:
“Sigh, and once again greed is the operative byword. ‘Congrats Brees, Manning, Mankins, and Jackson for being ‘that guy’. #douchebags”
Wow. Sidenote, what’s up with the “Chris Warcraft” moniker? I can’t imagine an NFL locker room treats Kluwe too kindly for being into wizards and warlocks. Haha.
