Gregg Williams has officially decided to cancel his interview for the head coaching vacancy of the Denver Broncos. The decision has apparently come after he conferred with his family and he decided they were too well adjusted and happy in New Orleans to make the move. As the offseason is upon us, I think the Saints now officially start it with huge positive news. I know some of you have turned real sour on him after the Seattle game but one game does not make a coach. If you look at his body of work it’s undeniable that Williams is one of the brightest defensive minds in the game by far. Don’t believe me? Check out these stats:
He led the Tennessee Titans’ defense to #1 in the NFL.
He led the Buffalo Bills’ defense to #2 in the NFL.
He led the Washington Redskins’ defense to #3 in the NFL.
He led the New Orleans Saints defense to #4 in the NFL.
So out of the 5 places he’s been in control of the defense, he’s turned 4 of them into top 5 defenses. You can’t argue with the numbers. His track records speaks for itself. The teams he coached, on average, were 14th overall on defense when he came on board. If you look at those numbers above it’s clear the kind of improvement they saw once he joined. Time and time again.
The Seattle game aside, this is a huge retention for the Saints. I believe this is as big as any possible offseason addition we could make. Keeping Williams was integral to our chances of competing again at the highest level. In an offseason that will be long, boring, and possibly devoid of any news if a CBA deal isn’t reached soon, the Saints managed to start it out with a bang.
