Saints Nation: Jammal Brown Trade Yields a 3rd Round Pick

Saints Nation: Jammal Brown Trade Yields a 3rd Round Pick I’m incredibly late to the party reporting this, but since there’s been so little news on this, I figured I would bring it to light. Evidently this news, while noteworthy, got lost in the shuffle of the season and upcoming playoffs. Most of you remember that former Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown was traded in the offseason to the Washington Redskins for a conditional pick. That pick’s condition was tied into the Donovan McNabb trade and ultimately got decided based on how well the Redskins did this season. In the McNabb trade, the Redskins and Eagles agreed to a 4th round pick next April that would become a 3rd round pick if the Redskins made the playoffs this season. When the Saints traded Browns to the Redskins, it was also a 4th round pick that became a 3rd round pick if the Eagles didn’t get it. In other words, if the Redskins made the playoffs, the Eagles would get their 3rd round pick next year and the Saints would get their 4th rounder. Since they didn’t, the Saints get their 3rd round pick and the Eagles get their 4th rounder. This trade was finalized once the Redskins were officially eliminated from playoff contention a couple of weeks ago. All in all the Saints ended up getting a 3rd round pick for Jammal Brown which worked out nicely and sets them up with another decent pick in this upcoming draft.

In case you were curious how Brown has fared in his first year as a Redskin, he’s struggled. The Redskins moved him to right tackle and he’s started 13 games, playing in 14. The first half of the season saw him move somewhat gingerly and he played through consistent hip soreness. With limited mobility, his production was considered a disappointment and many within the Redskins organization considered the trade a big mistake. He’s apparently started to turn a corner, though, and in the last few weeks he’s apparently grown closer to regaining his form prior to all the injuries. While this season was largely poor by his standards, the Redskins remain optimistic based on how he’s played of late that he’ll be able to make some noise in 2011. That said, Brown was scratched from the lineup this past weekend, so it looks like injuries have crept back on him. The extent of said injury has been kept pretty quiet so far, but it’s the same old story with Jammal Brown as far as I’m concerned. Great player, can’t stay healthy.

I think the Saints definitely got the better end of that trade, but of course the final verdict can’t be rendered until we see what they are able to turn that 3rd round pick into.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
