Saints Nation: Jonathan Casillas Aiming to Start

Saints Nation: Jonathan Casillas Aiming to StartWhile veteran Danny Clark was Scott Fujita’s short term replacement at starting outside linebacker last season, that only happened after young promising linebacker Jonathan Casillas injured himself in the final preseason game and was out for the season. Gregg Williams has been in love with Casillas, who was slated to start the 2010 campaign at SLB until the injury.

ESPN.com did a feature on Casillas today, speaking about the lockout and his recovery. As the article mentions, Casillas will be going up against the lockout, his recovery, and possibly incumbent starter Danny Clark as he tries to regain his starting spot. That’s an incredibly tall order. What the article doesn’t mention is that Casillas will also have to battle with 3rd round draft choice Martez Wilson, many of whom believe he is equipped to come in a battle for a starting spot right away. The longer the lockout continues…

though, the bigger the advantage Casillas will have over Wilson of being familiar with the defense. There’s also no guarantees Danny Clark will be back, as he’s currently an unrestricted free agent that’s waiting for the lockout to end before he can sign a contract with anyone.

Casillas is currently practicing at Tulane at the practices organized by Drew Brees with no physical limitations. He’ll need to make sure that stays the case if he wants a chance to regain his starting spot.
