I’m a little late to the party on this one but I did want to acknowledge that three former Saints: Morten Andersen, Buford Jordan and Vaughan Johnson, were all elected to the Louisiana Hall of Fame recently.
There’s no way I could pass up including the ridiculously sweet mullet that Morten “the great Dane” is sporting in this photo.
Here are my most vivid memories of these three guys:
With Morten, I actually have good ones and a bad one. I remember a game I attended in which he drilled a 60 yarder right before halftime against the Chicago Bears. The Saints were 7-0 in that season going into that game and would lose, against Mike Ditka of course, to drop to 7-1. That was the longest field goal Morten would ever hit.
I also have a very clear memory of Morten joining the Atlanta Falcons which still makes me sick to this day. He hit an NFL record tying 3 50+ yard field goals in one game to help the Falcons beat the Saints. Part of me will ever have trouble forgiving him for that one. I met Morten a couple of times back when you used to own a sports bar called “Champs” on Veterans Blvd. He was a super nice guy.
I met Buford Jordan actually a few years ago at the Superdome and he was signing autographs in the Saints’ Hall of Fame shrine. He was super nice as well. He’s still in amazing shape and runs a personal physical fitness business.
My biggest memory of Vaughan Johnson was him being out for an entire season due to a ridiculous staph infection in his leg. Weird, I know, but he was also never the same player when he came back. Of course my best memory is his year with the Dome Patrol when all four guys in the Saints’ linebacking core made the Pro Bowl together.
