Early this week, Sean Payton broke protocol by all but guaranteeing Marques Colston would be in the lineup tomorrow. Colston broke his collarbone, or so most of us think, and it was reported to be a 4 to 6 week injury. Instead, after missing just 2 games, Colston looks close to returning. The reason for this is a metal plate that was inserted into his collarbone which gives him increased stability in the bone much earlier than if they had just left it to heal on it’s own. Oh, the progress of medicine. It’s amazing how medicine plays such a role in recovery these days. Of course, it always has, but new procedures are being devised all the time to rush these athletes back on the field with quicker healing times. For example, you probably hear about sports hernias more and more. For some reason the Saints have had a ton of them lately. A new procedure has been devised in Germany to effectively go into the abdomen/groin and find the hernia, push it back in and stich up the area, in order for it to heal faster. That has cut down the recovery by weeks if not months. It looks like this move on Colston is a similar job.
While the bone is probably stable thanks to the plate, the big question will be: how much pain can Colston tolerate? He’s likely not at risk of making the injury worse, but I can’t imagine a hit over the middle from the linebacker isn’t going to be felt seriously in his injured shoulder.
So will Colston play, or won’t he?
I say he won’t. If he does, it’ll be as a decoy. I just don’t believe he’s ready to take a hit, and if he was, he’d be taking them in practice. I wouldn’t start him in fantasy football even if he does play, because the Saints have already conceded his snap count would be lessened from his typical workload. In the end, though, I stand firm in my prediction that he won’t play. I think this is a typical Sean Payton smokescreen, in an effort to get his opponent game planning for Marques Colston. You all should know by now to trust nothing the man says. Still, this is great news that Colston is on the mend and will be contributing again soon.
Oops, my bad Sean, didn’t mean to shed light on your plan. Hopefully the Jags’ coaching staff doesn’t read this blog.
