Saints’ center Olin Kreutz has apparently informed the team he is walking away from football as he’s lost his passion for the game and “doesn’t want to just pick up paychecks”. Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune broke the story. I’m sorry, Mr. Kreutz, but if that doesn’t qualify as the ultimate quitter act, what does?
I will say this doesn’t come as a complete shock. His performance to this point has been barely short of abysmal. The Saints were all but set to replace him with Brian de la Puente who has clearly outplayed him anyway. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kreutz quitting came on the heels of the Saints telling him this week that he was going to be benched. That’s just speculation but that move would be a predictable one given his performance.
Still, it’s one thing to go all Dan Morgan on the Saints in the middle of training camp, and it’s another to pull that move in week 7 of the regular season. You’ve got a locker room full of players and teammates that battle for you and respect you. He took that roster spot opening day from another player that would have been more committed. And what does Kreutz do? He walks out on them. That’s is an unacceptable act and it says something about his character. You start something you finish, always. He has quit on the Saints and tarnished his legacy in the process going out this way. I don’t care if he’s benched. He can stick around and help develop younger players and be a good role model. Instead, he’s choosing to leave them to their own devices. Thanks for nothing Olin.
