With two of the recent additions that I had good inside information on, I figured I would lean on my sources to get a little blurb on some of our recent signings. Thanks to Oddjob, who is my inside source for all things Chargers, I got the following on Darren Sproles:
“It’s a lateral move from Reggie Bush. I thought Sproles lost a step, too much dancing in the backfield, he can’t run the ball and he’s good as a receiver. He was basically replaced by Mike Tolbert last year who is much slower but produced way more. Sproles is good at returns also, but he had some critical fumbles on special teams and lost that job. Overall I think he’s still good for occassional flashes on swing passes and returns, just like Bush, but a good guy off the field and no Bush Hollywood drama.”
As for linebacker Will Herring, I got the scoop from Bloguin‘s Seattle Seahawks expert Matt Heuett who writes for Seahawk Addicts. He mentioned the following:
“We’re all sorry to see Herring go. He’s got a defensive back’s ball skills (he played safety through most of college), and in the last couple seasons his play against the run had improved dramatically. Ken Norton, Jr., the Seahawks’ current LB coach, liked to refer to him as the team’s fourth starting LB (the team runs a 4-3). He saw a lot of play in nickel situations (and replaced Aaron Curry on a lot of regular passing downs) and was a key contributor on special teams. Sometimes he gets a bit nervous and twitchy out there, but on the whole he’s a solid, reliable linebacker. I think you’re going to like him.”
Thanks much to both guys on the skinny!
