Saints Nation: Payton Era History Off Bye Week

Saints Nation: Payton Era History Off Bye WeekI am telepathic and I know what every single Saints fan in the universe is thinking at this very moment. “Hmmm, I wonder how the Saints have done traditionally with Sean Payton coming off a bye week”. It’s ok, admit it, you know I’m right. Well I’m here to answer what’s been bothering you so you can wonder no longer. The truth is, the Saints are surprisingly poor coming off of a bye week in the Sean Payton era. Here’s a recap:

YEAR OPPONENT RESULTS
2006 vs. Baltimore Ravens 22-35 Loss
2007 vs. Carolina Panthers 13-16 Loss
2008 at Atlanta Falcons 20-34 Loss
2009 vs. New York Giants 48-27 Win
2010 vs. Seattle Seahawks 34-19 Win

So Sean Payton boasts a sub .500 career post bye week record, well below his career record percentage of .613. That said, Sean Payton’s troops have won their last two, both at home, and a win next Sunday would run their era’s record in post bye week games to an even .500. Coincidentally, one of those teams they’ve beaten was the New York Giants, who they’ll host again a week from Monday night. In fact, in the Sean Payton era, the Saints are 2-0 against the G men.

I remember going into the 2008 bye week, Payton talked about how the team was 0-3 coming off bye weeks during his tenure and he talked about calling many veteran coaches and getting their advice on a better routine to change that trend. Whatever they’ve done the past two years seems to have righted the ship because the Saints have been able to rebound with emphatic wins the past two seasons. Hopefully that most recent streak will continue.
