Happy Mardi Gras everybody!! I hope you have a fun day filled with celebration, but stay safe out there. With the city on lockdown there’s not much news hitting the airwaves lately but we did get one nugget coming from Rafael Bush’s twitter account:
Resigning with the saints for another year #whodat

This news has not yet been confirmed officially by the NFL or the Saints, but it’s safe to say the two sides have agreed to terms at least verbally on a new deal. This is great news for the team as far as I’m concerned. Bush showed some serious hitting ability on special teams and some playmaking skills to boot. I feel great about him adding significant depth at safety, especially given how miserable of a year the starters had in Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper.
In fact, as I relayed in my PFF year in review post, Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper graded as the two worst safeties in the entire league this past season. Some changes must happen. I could see Harper getting released or being moved to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. I could see Jenkins being moved back to corner to play the slot, or to strong safety. Most of all, I think Isa Abdul-Quddus should be given a chance to start and while I don’t feel as strongly with Rafael Bush he showed some real promise as well and I wouldn’t hate him getting some reps in spot duty. Consider that Bush and Abdul-Quddus had as many interceptions combined (3) as Jenkins/Harper in less than half the amount of playing time. Bush also forced a fumble and recovered two this past season, while Jenkins/Harper combined for zero forced and zero recovered. So yeah, our backups are way better than our starters and they need to play more.
Welcome back Rafael Bush. We need you.
