Saints Nation: Reggie Bush Traded to the Miami Dolphins

Saints Nation: Reggie Bush Traded to the Miami DolphinsReggie Bush’s career with the Saints have been full of untapped potential, and some impressive highlights. Today Adam Schefter confirmed that a trade to the Miami Dolphins has been finalized, and that Reggie Bush will be taking his talents to South Beach. He’ll sign a 2 year contract with the Dolphins that will give the Saints more cap room, and they’ll likely even get a draft pick in return for it. What that draft pick is remains to be seen, but considering the fact that releasing him was a very real scenario, I can’t imagine it’s anything better than a 5th rounder.

Bush came to the Saints with arguably more expectations than any draft pick in team history, and while he had 5 somewhat productive seasons during his career in New Orleans…

he never lived up to the hype. His shining moment came in the playoffs against the Arizona Cardinals, on the way to a Super Bowl run, when he ran for 84 yards, caught for 24, and also ran a punt back for a touchdown. While Bush always showed flashes, between injuries, lack of consistency, and a propensity to make critical mental mistakes, he was never able to fully tap out his potential in New Orleans. Don’t get me wrong, he had some terrific plays and his explosiveness is undeniable, but he never justified his contract or his status as a 2nd overall draft choice.

Personally, I’m sad to see him go. It was always my hope that Reggie would mature and grow up in New Orleans, and reach his fullest abilities with the Saints. I’m sad that will now never happen. He got a lot of love from some fans, more than he deserved, but he also caught a lot of heat. Part of that was his lack of maturity, and part of that was his celebrity status which was unfairly placed on him. All that aside, Reggie is a good person who did a lot for New Orleans. Put aside his performance on the field, especially in the 2009 playoffs, and he’s got a number of charitable endeavors that will better our city for a very long time. The minute he signed his first contract, he donated a boatload to fixing up the 9th ward. For that alone, he deserves respect from Saints fans. I wish Reggie the best, his game breaking ability and goofy smile will be sorely missed in the Saints’ locker room.
