I know you’ve heard before, but this time we’re getting really really close. The lockout will be over soon, mark my words. The last remaining major obstacle in discussions, the rookie wage system, has reportedly been settled. That’s good news, because that was the topic that threatened the harmony of discussions the most at this point. That’s news that was expected for guys like Cam Jordan and Mark Ingram (above), but it also means they’re not going to be able to cash in anywhere like 1st round picks in years past.
The salary cap looks like it’s going to be set at $120 million. Right now the Saints are at about…
$105 million with a bunch of players they need to re-sign. They’ll hopefully get some immediate relief by extending Drew Brees and restructuring/release Reggie Bush, but the Saints are right up against the cap. It’s going to be tough to spend on Lance Moore, Carl Nicks, Roman Harper, Jonathan Goodwin, Jermon Bushrod etc… there’s going to be some tough decisions. The Saints have a lot of unrestricted free agents to deal with. There should be a lot of movement very soon. Guys like Devery Henderson and Randall Gay who have large contracts are also at risk.
