Things have been looking really bleak the last couple of weeks in New Orleans following all the things that have unfolded with the Saints’ organization. Last night brought a flurry of positive news that should give us some hope, if nothing else, heading to 4pm today which marks the start of NFL free agency.
The first piece of news which put in context with the others is least noteworthy is that the Saints re-signed Chase Daniel for a 1 year, $1 million deal, inclusive of a 300k signing bonus. It’s nice to have him back, especially with Drew Brees’ contract status currently in limbo. Daniel was a restricted free agent, but it didn’t seem like the Saints wanted to offer him the minimum tender (which would have been more than $1 million) so I feared Daniel would test the open market.
Then there’s Marques Colston and Carl Nicks…
Pro Football Talk has reported that “Colston badly wants to remain a Saint” and “the two sides are working feverishly toward finalizing a new contract before Colston becomes a free agent at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday”. That’s a far cry from previous reports that he wouldn’t give the Saints a discount or ESPN’s Adam Schefter who last week claimed Colston looked on his way out. While this doesn’t ensure Colston will definitively return, this is by far the best news we have heard on this situation.
Regarding Carl Nicks, the source comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Nicks tweeted yesterday night:
“Still need time to think and talk with my family“
Again, this is far from anything definitive… but it does paint a prettier picture than Nicks’ previous proclamations that he’s as good as gone and his disappointment that he hadn’t even heard from the Saints leading up to free agency.
So at least now we can rest assured the Saints are doing what they can, despite a horrible cap situation, heaving penalties looming, and a messy contract situation with their superstar quarterback, to retain both Colston and Nicks. We’ll find out how this plays out very soon.
