5 things to watch for in tonight’s game:
GAMEDAY!!!!!! Finally after months of listening and watching the lockout situation it is time to open the season. I always love the opening game because you never know what this season brings but the fact that they are opening it in front of a national audience makes it special. Be on alert Green Bay, the Saints are looking to get the Lombardi Thophy back in Louisiana this year. With so much to look for in tonight’s game, I picked out five that I will be looking for in tonight’s contest.
1. Can the Saints score points?
The last two times Saints have played on Thursday night, they averaged 12 points a game. I know and you know: to win this game they will have to score more than 12 points. This game has the feeling that it could be a track meet or whoever got the ball last will win. It should be a back and fourth affair and an all around good game.
2. The running game
It will be refreshing to see a healthy group of backs after last year’s debacle. I am interested to see how Mark Ingram does in his first NFL game, maybe after his first touchdown he’ll do a Lambeau leap! I think New Orleans will start off the game trying to get the running game going to set up the passing game but knowing Coach Payton he is liable to throw the ball every play of the first half.
3. How will they contain Jermichael Finley?
To me this is the biggest question for the defense going in to tonight’s game. Jermichael is a matchup nightmare as he’s too fast for linebackers and too big for cornerback or safeties. He is going to get chances tonight to make plays but I think maybe jamming him at the line to slow him down will be the way to go. Let’s just hope that slows him down.
4. Will there be any defense tonight?
Both teams have good defensive coordinators so you think there would be a shortage of points scored in this game. The fact that this is the first game, you could say there will be mistakes, turnovers and jitters. It always seems like when you have two teams known for their offense it is a low scoring contest but with the makeup of these two teams you have to think something has gotten to give.
5. Is this a NFC title game preview?
The last two years these two teams have been on a collision course to meet in the NFC championship game. 2009 the Packers lost to Cardinals and last year the Saints got tripped up against the Seahawks ruining the chance of these two meeting. I will say the winner of this game will have a leg up on the competition but Green Bay is the defending champion and all roads lead through them.
