The Saints’ top special teams gunner Courtney Roby, who has been on the roster as a very important part of the team’s special teams for the last 4 years, has re-signed with the Saints. The deal is reported to be for one year. While Roby lost his kick returning duties to Darren Sproles last year, he still led the team in special teams tackles and enjoyed a productive year in kick coverage.
Presumably to make this deal fit within the cap, the Saints also released linebacker Jerimiha Hunter. Hunter was an undrafted rookie free agent last year and he spent the year on IR with an achilles injury.
Welcome back to the team #15! Glad to see you back with the team for a 5th year.
Other Saints news worth reading:
— It’s official, Sean Payton can’t exchange ANY contact with anyone on the Saints. Player or otherwise. This ESPN report makes it clear he can’t have any role whatsoever with the team this year.
— The NFL is going to release the NFL 2012 schedule tonight at 6pm central. Besides their divisional opponents we already know the Saints will play the Eagles, Redskins, 49ers, Chiefs and Chargers at home and the Cowboys, Giants, Packers, Broncos and Raiders on the road.
— As the Saints continue to await player punishments, it’s now being reported that Vilma is bracing himself for anywhere from 2 to 8 games, while Roman Harper and Will Smith could also face stiff suspensions.
I’ll have a write up tomorrow on the Saints’ schedule and my thoughts on it.
