Based on the performances in preseason of Patrick Ramsey and Chase Daniel, rookie 7th round pick Sean Canfield was never going to get a chance to make the Saints’ roster. The Saints released him today, along with receiver Andy Tanner, in an effort to get even with the league mandated 75 man roster limit. This is the before last cut, with a minimum of 22 players set to be released after the Saints’ final preseason game in time for the roster to be set at 53. Keep in mind Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram are still on the PUP list as well, so they don’t count against the 75 man orster. As always, don’t be surprised to see the Saints sign a roster casualty from elsewhere as well. Some team’s trash can sometimes be another team’s gold. While the release of Canfield was expected, I would have liked to have seen the guy play extended time in at least one preseason game. The fact that the Saints didn’t even give him a chance is a little disappointing. Most of all, I wish the Saints hadn’t wasted a 7th round pick on the guy, when the competition for backup quarterback seemed plenty heated with Ramsey and Daniel. I would have loved to see that 7th round choice go to a running back or a special teams contributor. Just sayin’…
Good luck to you Sean with the rest of your NFL career. Best on the timing of this release, I think it’s safe to say the Saints have no use for Canfield on their practice squad.
