The Saints didn’t wait long to move once they realized Carl Nicks was a goner. He’s been replaced at left guard by Ben Grubbs formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. I have to assume he was offered the same contract the Saints put on the table for Nicks – 5 years, $36 million with a $10 million signing bonus. Grubbs, a pro bowl alternate last year and a former 1st round pick, was widely regarded as the second best guard in free agency behind Carl Nicks. While he’s not Carl Nicks, he’s still a very good offensive lineman and a suitable replacement. Grubbs has been long praised for his football IQ and strong work ethic, so I believe he will fit right in with the high character mold of the Saints locker room (on offense, anyway).
Welcome to the team Mr. Grubbs!
This money does leave me wondering how the Saints can fit this all within the cap, though. Could a cut be looming?
