The roster tweaks have been plentiful in the last 24 hours, and after Rafael Bush the Saints have added another new face to their defensive backfield. This time it’s Jerome Murphy, formerly of the Saint Louis Rams. Murphy was waived during final cuts by the Rams and the Saints snatched him for their 53 man roster in favor of Elbert Mack – who is now no longer on the roster. Murphy was drafted in the 3rd round in 2010 by Steve Spagnuolo, so he’s a guy that the defensive coordinator already clearly believes in and he’s well versed with Spags’ defensive system. Murphy will immediately get plugged into the Saints’ depth chart at corner where he will battle with Corey White for some time at the dime back position.
Murphy, originally out of South Florida, supposedly showcases…
4.5 speed and decent size (6’0″, 200 lbs). He’s know as very physical, not afraid of contact, and a willing/able tackler. Murphy played a reserve role as a rookie and finished with one interception. Unfortunately for him, an fractured ankle injury the following preseason would land him on injured reserve for the entirety of the 2011 season. Evidently the Rams didn’t see enough from him coming back to keep him but all signs point to him being healthy.
