The Saints have started to make the majority of their moves to get down to 53, and there’s only 9 cuts left after yesterday evening for them to get to where they need to be. You’ll notice a couple surprises, including guys that have been with the team a long time that were coaching staff favorites. That’s the tough part of final cuts, some guys are going to leave the team before they expect or maybe deserve to. Here is a recap of the moves made so far:
Saints release:
S Chris Reis
S Pierson Prioleau
T Jordan Black
TE Tory Humphrey
CB Trumaine McBride
CB Quincy Butler
T George Foster
Saints waive:
WR Martez Billings
TE Tyler Lorenzen
LB Dwight Roberson
DT Dexter Larimore
Saints place on PUP:
RB Chris Ivory
Saints place on IR:
DE Greg Romeus (technically the non football injury list, but same effect)
S Paul Oliver
RB Patrick Cobbs
WR Joseph Morgan
For those of you that have asked – the difference between being “waived” and “released” is based on the years of service you have in the NFL. If you are a veteran you are released and you immediately become a free agent. If you have less than 4 years of experience, you are waived and you have to clear waivers before you can become a free agent and sign with anyone. If a team makes a waiver claim on you, you have to go to that team.
That puts the Saints’ roster currently at 64, which means 9 more cuts loom before the Saints can get to the league mandated 53. We’ll find out soon enough who those guys are. Not many of these moves are surprising, though the release of Black, Reis and Prioleau were unexpected. Those guys were all expected to be key reserves for the Saints. It’ll be really interesting to see who make the roster in their place. I figured I’d post the picture of Reis recovering the onsides kick in the Super Bowl, he deserves that much as credit for his time with the team.
