The Superdome is apparently undergoing some major changes this offseason in preparation for the 2012 National Championship Game and 2013 Super Bowl. The most notable part of the makeover is a visual change that will make the lower bowl rectangular instead of oval. The entire makeover is supposed to approximate at $85 million in cost. The article claims the Superdome will get it’s “biggest overhaul since Hurricane Katrina”. We’ve heard Tom Benson complain about the Superdome quality for years, and there’s been a number of updates in the last 5 years that were all made in the attempt to keep it relevent with all the other new NFL stadiums out there.
I remember returning to the Superdome for the first game since Katrina against the Atlanta Falcons and what was most notable when I first walked in were the changes made. They really did a fantastic job at keeping the Superdome fairly competitive with state of the art construction.
It will be nice to see what they come up with this time. Doug Thornton, the VP of SMG (the company that manages the Dome), claims they’re going for “wow factor”, and I thought they accomplished that with their last renovations. I have a feeling this may be even more impressive. Hopefully enough to keep Tom Benson’s complaints at bay for another 5 years or so. I guess his pockets are so deep after the Super Bowl win and constant sell outs that a new stadium is less front of mind. With the updates the Dome keeps getting, there’s a good chance it will be the Saints’ home stadium for another decade at least. And why not? If Katrina and the current state of the economy can’t demolish it, then what can?
Can’t wait to see how things look upon completion!
