Last week I wrote about the top playmakers in Saints history excluding quarterbacks. This week I figured I would write about the top 5 quarterbacks in Saints history. The Saints aren’t known, typically, for their quarterbacks. So some of these aren’t great per say, but nonetheless, here they are starting at 5.
5. Billy Kilmer: Kilmer played only 4 seasons with the Saints from 1967 to 1970. He was picked up in the expansion draft in 1967 and was going to be the third string quarterback. However, he proved to be the best quarterback on the team and took over as the starter. Kilmer had his best game as a Saint on November 2, 1969, where he threw for 345 yards and 6 touchdowns in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
4. Bobby Hebert: Hebert came to the Saints in 1985 after playing in the USFL for 3 years. He became full-time starter in 1987 over John Fourcade. As starter he led the Saints to four winning seasons and had a career 49-26-0 record as quarterback for Saints. He passed for 21,683 yards with 135 touchdowns and a 58.9 completion percentage.
3. Aaron Brooks: Brooks came to New Orleans after being 3rd string in Green Bay to be the backup for Jeff Blake. After the 11th game in 2000, Brooks took over after Blake broke his foot. To end the 2000 season he led the Saints to a 3-2 record to make the Saints have a 10-6 record. In the first round he led the Saints to their first ever playoff win over the defending Super Bowl champ Rams 31-28. In that game, Brooks threw for 4 touchdowns which accounted for all their touchdowns. That is probably his high point in his career. In six seasons with the Saints he threw for 19,156 yards and 120 touchdowns. His numbers are not as good as Heberts’, but he led the team to its first ever playoff win and therefore, I rank him higher at 3.
2. Archie Manning: Manning was drafted second overall by the Saints in 1971 where he played ten full seasons overall for the Saints. Archie had a tough draw though, because, out of all ten seasons, he had nine losing seasons with one season of .500(1979). In 13 total seasons he never played for a team with a winning record or made the playoffs. He did make two Pro Bowls though in 1978 and 1979. While in New Orleans, he finished with a record of 35-91-3. I know I’m not making it look good for Archie, but much of this came from being on bad teams. He threw for 21,734 yards and 115 touchdowns while playing with the Saints. His record may not reflect it, but Archie was a very good quarterback for the Saints.
1. Drew Brees: Ok, so who didn’t see this coming? Brees has set records in his 7 years with the Saints, and not just Saints records. He has the most consecutive games with at least 1 pass touchdown (54), single season passing leader (5,476) in 2011, and many more. He led the Saints to a 13-3 record in 2009 with the franchises’ first ever Super Bowl win over the Colts, 31-17. Although he won the Super Bowl in 2009, 2011 was statistically his best season, where he set many records. With the Saints he has a record of 99-70-0 and demolished the Saints passing record with 3,357 passing yards and 244 touchdowns with a 67.1 passing percentage. Brees by far has been the best quarterback in Saints history in every aspect of the game.
