In addition to signing Jonathan Goodwin who will compete for the starting center job, the Saints also bolstered their interior defensive line getting veteran defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick on a one year deal. Deaderick is a former 7th round pick in 2010 by the Patriots and 26 years old. He’s starter 15 career games for the Patriots and Jaguars and has 5.5 career sacks. He was most recently on injured reserve with the Jaguars towards the end of last season after playing as a reserve for 13 games.
I have a very hard time seeing Deaderick bypass Brodrick Bunkley and/or John Jenkins for playing time, but he’ll battle for a job as a defensive line rotation guy and reserve on the 53 man roster. He should view someone like Tyrunn Walker as more direct competition. For what it’s worth Pro Football Focus graded Deaderick very poorly with a -10.5 for the season. Most of that came from negative run support grades. He hasn’t graded positively according to them since 2010, his rookie season in New England.
To make room for these two players the Saints released G Mike Golic, Jr. and LB Spencer Hadley.
