The Saints made a couple of roster moves to their 90 man team yesterday as they prepare for camp, which starts tomorrow. The new additions are nose tackle Tyrone Ezell and linebacker Marcus Thompson, and they released NT Moses McCray and LB Cheta Ozougwu. All four players are undrafted rookie free agents, so the odds for the two newest guys to make the squad are long. The Saints were the first to break the news and they offered a write up on the new players via their website.
I will say this is a good opportunity for Ezell with John Jenkins starting training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Jenkins can come off that list at any time, but the fact that he starts there means they’ll be some second team snaps to go around at the nose position. Thompson, on the other hand, will face a long list of healthy competition.
In addition to Jenkins, the Saints also placed rookie Tavon Rooks on the non-football injury list. Patrick Robinson, Victor Butler, Jairus Byrd and Joe Morgan were not on that list, so they should be good to go for the start of camp. That is very encouraging news on all fronts. Ozougwu was briefly placed on the PUP list as well before getting waived.
The Jenkins news is a bit concerning, but hopefully this won’t affect his ability to start at the beginning of the season. Brodrick Bunkley’s willingness to take a pay cut feels even more fortunate given that circumstance.
