Saints trade Kenny Stills for Dannell Ellerbe and a 3rd Round Draft Choice to Dolphins

In a move even more shocking than the Jimmy Graham trade, the Saints have parted ways with Kenny Stills. He’s been traded to the Dolphins for a 3rd round pick and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.

This deal almost has to have a new contract involved for Ellerbe, who is grossly overpaid. Ellerbe played in 2013 with a bad Pro Football Focus rating and spent 2014 on IR with a hip injury. This pickup makes very little sense unless he’s healthy and costing a lot less.

Stills was drafted in the 5th round but the return is a 3rd round pick. While that sounds nice as a flip, Stills has produced more like a 2nd rounder. This trade is a real head scratcher. Rumor is Stills was flighty so this may have been a locker room move.

As for Ellerbe, his contract better be re-worked ASAP because even if he’s Jeff Ireland’s guy there’s no way the Saints should be paying him $8.5 million. I’d prefer to keep Lofton at that price.
