The San Francisco 49ers have released running back LaMichael James. James requested his release this morning after he saw limited carries in the 49ers blowout win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. He was listed as the third running back on the depth chart heading in to Sunday’s game but the 49ers usually give all of their backs at least 5-10 carries per game.
Rookie Carlos Hyde ran for 50 yards and a touchdown while averaging 7.1 yards per carry. The team’s veteran back Frank Gore ran for 66 yards and averaged just over 4.0 yards per carry. Hyde’s role in the offense will only increase as the season goes on leaving James as the odd man out.
James is a skilled return man, who could also serve as a third down back for a team in need. There are several teams in need of a speed back with special teams value. The best fit for James in my opinion would be the Baltimore Ravens. Having just released Ray Rice, the Ravens are in need of a young running back that can help in the passing game. Other teams to keep an eye on are the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons.
