Saturday before the deadline

I’m going use this post as a catchall thread to post and discuss Pirate-related rumors throughout the afternoon, and anytime something big happens or is about to happen, I’ll give it its own thread. There might not be too much today beyond what’s already happened, but who knows?

The Hunter Pence trade was completed between Philadelphia and Houston last night without Domonic Brown or a third team. Even without Brown, the Phillies gave up a whole lot in Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton. That’s way more than a team like the Pirates should’ve been willing to give up and I’m honestly kind of surprised to see Pence get as much attention as he’s gotten at this deadline. I’ll go back to my earlier prediction and say that when he hits his fourth year of arbitration in 2012, he’s going to be cost-prohibitive, even for the Phillies.

Jen Langosch reiterated that the Pirates are very interested in Jason Kubel. Kubel’s bat would be a nice fit and I doubt he’d be terribly expensive, but the Twins don’t seem all that interested in trading him. That could be posturing, of course, but it’s where we are right now.
