tBBC’s newest edition and recruiting guru checks in with the class of 2010.
While we may be looking at a fairly small class of 18 newcomers, they seem to be creating quite the early buzz! Here’s a look at 7 of them making some early noise…
Corey “Philly” Brown – He has already been coined with the nickname “Philly” for his hometown. He has caught the eye of some of his teammates. The early buzz is he has the open field moves and speed to be a threat.
Christian Bryant – The Comparison to Antoine Winfield is already getting thrown around. While I think it is way too early to mention him in that same breath, it is great to hear that while small in stature he is showing a very physical style of play in practice so far. It will be hard for him to find playing time behind Chekwa, Torrence, Howard, and Evege, but he has the talent if he is called upon. I don’t see a red-shirt in his future.
Taylor Graham – Surprised to hear his name so much this early, and Tress put his name out there with Bauserman and Guition in competing for the backup job. I see no reason not to red-shirt him, but he is not just a throw in and a career backup as some had thought.
Jonathon Hankins – Another young guy making noise already. Could see time in short yardage situations. He doesn’t have great stamina and the ability to go all game long, but he does fill a void that we don’t have and that is the big run stuffer in the middle.
Carlos Hyde – If you thought Graham was a surprise I couldn’t be more surprised here. He looks like a ton of bricks with comparisons to Beanie being thrown around. I like the idea of him being a short yardage option this year, but with Boom, Saine, Hall, and Berry it will be tough to see carries. He will see time on special teams if he isn’t in the backfield.
Andrew Norwell – He is going to be a beast. He looks like he has already been in the program for 2 years. Could possibly see some backup time, but we have depth on the o-line. A year in the weight room and we will see a monster. The jury is still out on which side of the line, right or left?
Tyrone Williams – Could he be the red-zone threat that everyone always seems to want but is impossible to find? He has the size and athletic ability to go up and get the ball. Would Tress put in some special packages for him in the red-zone?
This is just the short version of what we have with this class, we’re waiting to see what happens to the 11 other guys like McVey, Louis, Baldwin, Roby. There will be some interesting decisions on who red-shirts and who doesn’t.
The bigger question maybe how many of these newcomers will we be planting trees for in the Buckeye Grove when it’s all said and done. Sounds like they’re off to a great start!
