Scherzer Outduels Lester in Series Opener

Last night’s game lived up to the potential of a pitcher’s duel with Jon Lester vs. Max Scherzer.  Lester only gave up one run, but that was enough to Scherzer and the Tigers bullpen and they walked away with a 1-0 win.

Lester gave up his one and only run in the 1st inning.  Lester had 2 outs in the inning, but gave up an RBI single to Torii Hunter to have the Tigers up 1-0.  On the other side Max Scherzer was absolutely dealing.  The Sox thought they might have caught a lucky break when the skies broke open and the game went into a rain delay in the top of the 4th inning.  The rain delay was only 47 minutes so both Lester and Scherzer were able to stay in the game.  Through the 5th inning Scherzer still hadn’t given up a hit.

Lester was done after 5 innings with a pitching line of 94 pitches, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 7 Ks.  That should usually be good enough to be in line for a win, but Lester left the mound in line for a loss.  Badenhop took the mound in the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning. The Sox bats finally got a hit in the bottom of the 6th.  The Sox threatened to score, but were unable to get the run across the plate.  Badenhop got 2 outs in the 7th and then Edward Mujica came into the game to get the final out of the inning.  Ross threw out Castellanos and that was the end of the inning.  The Sox threatened to score again in the bottom of the 7th, but AJ Pierzynski came in to pinch hit and ended the inning by way of a double play.  Mujica pitched a scoreless 8th and Tazawa pitched a scoreless 9th, however the Sox weren’t able to score a single run.  The Sox fell to the Tigers with a 1-0 loss.
