Scholarship Math Update

Scholarship Math Update

Happy Monday afternoon Coug fans! If you’re a fellow Washingtonian, I hope you had a chance to get out and enjoy the sun over the weekend.

Did you have chance to get a look at Hawk’s Monday morning post? Some pretty good links in there, make sure you take a look!

While laying my sun soaked body out in the pool yesterday, I was racking my Coors Light soaked brain for ideas, when a great topic came up. With all the recent comings and goings of scholarship athletes on our football team, and with recruiting about to kick into overdrive, I thought it made perfect sense to take a look at where the Cougs stand today, as far as available scholarships for the 2013 Recruiting Cycle.

Before we click the old jumperoonie, if you haven’t signed up for our 3rd Annual, Yahoo Pick Em League, here are the details.

Click here to sign-up. Search for Group 1191 and use “gocougs” as the password. The group has filled up rather quickly the past couple of years, if you cannot join because the group is full, please message me and I will get the second league setup!

More after the jump!

Scholarship Math Update

So there are going to be a few things to take note of, before we preview the math. First, I am excluding Jeff Tuel, because as of today, he is a Senior. Additionally, John Fullington and Marquess Wilson, while both considered potential underclassmen to enter the draft, are still with us. Also, Mansell Simmons and Max Hersey will be listed as TEs, so no need to point out they aren’t really Tight Ends. Yes, that’s a preemptive on your smart assedness, Soze!

While it’s possible some guys may get put on scholie for this upcoming season if we’re currently under the limit, my guess is guys like Furney, Bontempts, Gilbertson & Byers are only year-to-year if at all.

Let’s break this down by position, shall we?

As of today, we have 69 scholarship players returning next season. It’s highly likely that a member or two on the current roster will trasnfer out in search of playing time, some may retire due to injuries, and given the law of averages, another member or two will be kicked off the team by Coach Leach for disciplinary reasons.

That being said, with 13 high school and JC players verbally committed to the 2013 Class, that technically leaves room for 16 scholarship athletes to join the team next August. I would imagine the only spots we see Leach & Co. fill are along both lines and at Cornerback.

Thoughts? Concerns? Did I miss somebody?

Have a great evening Coug Fans!
