Phillies #10 prospect Scott Kingery was highlighted as one of the top second basemen prospects to watch by MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo. Kingery sneaks onto the list at #10 and not much is said on him in the breakdown of his abilities. This list includes players like the Red Sox’s Yoan Moncada, the Reds’ Jose Peraza, and the Pirates’ Alen Hanson. Safe to say there is no shortage of talent on the list and it certainly says something about Scott Kingery’s early progress in the Phillies farm system to be mentioned on a list like this.
For those who aren’t familiar with Scott Kingery, the Phillies selected second baseman with the 48th pick in the second round of last year’s draft. Kingery did not receive a lot draft attention for some reason after coming off one of the best seasons in college baseball in 2015. Phillies sent him straight to Lakewood for full-season ball and he has the kind of advanced bat that could help move through fairly quickly. Kingery could very well be Chase Utley’s successor at second base and right now the 21-year old is expected in the majors by 2018.
The state of the Phillies farm system is the best it has been in years and having multiple players showing up on the top prospects by position watchlists definitely attributes to the solid job the Phillies have done in restocking the once depleted system.
