A week or two ago, Jeff Fisher said there would be competition for the free safety position between incumbent Lamont Thompson and a pair of fourth-round draft picks, Vincent Fuller and Calvin Lowry. Now the Titans have added another man to the mix in free agent Bryan Scott.
Fisher called Thompson out after the Dolphins game last year and his proclamation of a competition, plus GM Mike Reinfeldt’s addition of Scott, is a vote of no confidence in Thompson.
Drafted by the Falcons as a second-round pick in 2003, Scott played strong safety and had 36 starts. He was the backup to free safety Josh Bullocks in New Orleans last year. Here are Scott’s stats and a partial bio.
This is the scouting report on Scott coming out of college:
Tough, competitive, physical hitter with a well-toned frame…Has good closing speed, showing above-average acceleration out of his turns and the sudden burst needed to stay with receivers on deep routes…Quick to react to plays in front of him and does a nice job of handling switch-offs working the zone…Very good leaper who uses his size and strength to out-muscle receivers going up for the ball…Shows true aggression in run support, stepping up to fill the rush lanes with force…Takes proper angles in pursuit and delivers good pop and power as he stays low in his pads when tackling…Can accelerate out of his turns and has the quickness to drop off in deep coverage…Uses his hands with aggression to defeat blocks…Shows good timing working in space, displaying above-average change-of-direction agility while producing big hits working in the box.
The scouting report looks pretty good and he was a starter and productive contributor for the Falcons his first two years. It appears he had shoulder problems in 2005, his last year with Atlanta, and missed most of the first part of the season with the Saints last year, when he had thigh and hamstring injuries. Not exactly encouraging, but if his injuries are behind him, I’m willing to give him a clean slate as he competes for a job this year.
